    To my younger self,

Hi. It is me, your future self at the age of 33. I wanted to send you a loving letter as our birthday passes by.

You just turned 18 and are in the 12th grade. You are at a good point in your life. Yes, you have your flaws, problems and wounds from your childhood. Who doesn’t? Life has never been easy for you. But you do not let those things stop you from believing in myself, staying positive and pushing forward. You take the initiative, work hard, and are ambitious to one day reach your full potential. You welcome personal growth and strive to make positive healthy changes.

You are a beautiful, strong and intelligent woman. You are a cheerful, outgoing, down to earth, and easygoing. You are young, in-shape, full of energy and passion. You love nature; it is your deep passion and you feel most like yourself when you are outdoors. You like adventuring out, having fun, and enjoying life. You are intuitive and a dreamer at heart. You are loyal, patient and dependable. You are kind, loving and giving. You show empathy and are forgiving. You are optimistic and have faith. You are authentic, genuine, and follow your inner guide. You show integrity and live consciously. You are courageous, resilient and have inner strength. You try your best to keep an open-mind, be nonjudgmental, and see different perspectives.

My Birthday Wish for you is: Please never forget about the essence of who you are deep within. It is your lifeblood that no one can take from you. It provides you with the driving force to continue despite the obstacles that life throws your way.

In the coming years, you will face some of the most challenging times of your life. Events will occur, and your soul will be tested. You will lose your footing; lose sight of who you and your goals in life. Your energy will start to get drained, you will get depressed, and you eventually breakdown. Your whole world will seem as if is crashing down. You will feel misunderstood; unseen for who you are as an individual. You will feel unloved, unwanted, undesirable, unattractive, used, discarded, and abandoned. You will feel that you are not enough, but too much at the same time. You will feel uncertain of yourself, and eventually stop believing in your worth. You will get your heart broke and be in constant pain. You will get to such a low point that you will want to give-up on life all together. But you must not give-up. You have so much to offer to this world. You will one day start to rediscover your inner soul and see hints of light at the end of the tunnel. You will you sit and wonder how you got to this place? You will yearn to get back to a place where you are smiling again. And so you will start to take baby steps. It will be an ongoing process. It will take a great deal of faith, will-power, and many years to start recovering from it all. And as I am writing this letter to you now, you are still struggling to dig yourself out of the dark. You will feel that you are constantly taking two steps forward and one step backwards. But you are hopeful and see the light in the near distance, and so you keep fighting. Please remember what the Dalai Lama said, “Never give up. No matter what is happening, no matter what is going on around you, never give up.”

I wish to share with you three beautifully written messages. I hope they comfort your heart and ease your pain during the darkest of times.

From a Hallmark greeting card; last line was added by me:

“The Oak Tree” – a message of encouragement

A mighty wind blew night and day.
It stole the oak tree’s leaves away,
Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark
Until the oak was tired and stark.
But still the oak tree held its ground
While other trees fell all around.

The weary wind gave up and spoke,
“How can you still be standing, Oak?”
The oak tree said, “I know that you
Can break each branch of mine in two,
    Carry every leaf away,
Shake my limbs, and make me sway.
But I have roots stretched in the earth,
    Growing stronger since my birth.
You’ll never touch them, for you see,
They are the deepest part of me.
    Until today, I wasn’t sure
Of just how much I could endure.
But now I’ve found, with thanks to you,
I’m stronger than I ever knew.”

    Especially now,
    try to remember
    that you’re stronger
    than any problem you encounter
    or any disappointment
    life will bring.

    Thinking of you,
    Believing in you,
    Caring for you,
    Loving you.

    From another Hallmark greeting card:

    “Peace, hope, comfort”

    Wishing you Peace…
the calm that comes from trusting
    in something beyond yourself.

    Wishing you Hope…
the strength that comes from believing
    in the possibilities that happiness
    lies ahead of you.

    Wishing you Comfort…
The feeling that comes from knowing
How much others care for you.

From a Hallmark greeting card by DaySpring:

“When your best friend is God”

When your best friend is God,
    you’re never alone.
    Every minute of every day,
    He is by your side,
    helping you find your way,
    wanting good things for you.

When your best friend is God,
    you’re truly understood.
He knows you better than you know yourself –
your strengths and weakness, all your beautiful possibilities.

When your best friend is God,
you’re loved with a love that can lift you
above anything you face in life,
    a love unlike any other.
    You can hope without end
When your best friend is God.

    Love always,

    Your older self
