The scientific press tells the story of a singular whale. His call can be heard often and is completely unremarkable but for the fact it is sung at an unusually high frequency, beyond most whales range. No other whale recognizes his call and he receives no reply. His mating call is unanswerable.
They speculate that he may be as much as 100 years old and there is no reason to suspect he has ever had a response or ever will.
I think that is both horrible and beautiful, in the way nature so often is. 100 years absolutely alone, but he still sings. He still has hope.
You may tell me he is a dumb beast following a natural predetermined system of behaviors but I admire that beast. You can tell me his heart is the size of a small car, but I know it is bigger.
I’m still singing too kindred soul.
