Dear Father, Darla and Members of the Church
Here’s what I believe I believe there is a God (the God). I don’t believe in a sun god or a moon god. I believe God created us and that Adam sinned causing humans to be of sinful nature. I believe God is all powerful and I believe in heaven and hell.
First off I DO know what I am talking about. I have been educated all of my life about God. I went to a Christian private school for seven years out of my eleven years of schooling. I learned all the stories and I studied all the gospels. I was even on a quiz bowl team of sorts except it was about the bible. So before you say I’m naive and before you tell me I have no idea what I’m talking about. I DO.
Here is more of what I believe. I believe that gay is okay. I believe that listening to “provocative” music isn’t bad. I believe that drinking and smoking and drugs have nothing to do with you religion though I do not promote any of these things. I believe that being concerned with your looks doesn’t make you vain or mean you have low self esteem. I believe you can wear whatever you want. You can dance however you want. You can say curse words.
That being said I don’t know what religion I am. I will sit in Sunday school and you tell me everybody worships something. You say everyone one has a religion. So what then? Do I worship shoes? Is my religion one direction? Is that really what you are trying to say? Then it is obvious that you do not know the definitions of religion and worship?

the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.

the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.

As much as I hate to say this One Direction is not a god or gods. Also I don’t know if you’ve noticed but shoes, clothes, music, animals, school, etc. All of these things that we prioritize are not gods. We do not worship these things. You can’t just throw “the god of” in front of these words to make yourself make sense. You cannot just make up gods. You also cannot argue that past peoples have done this. No one just invented Buddha or The Sun god. These people genuinely believed that these were higher deities. I don’t believe in a god of shoes that blesses everyone one with gorgeous footwear. Please stop telling me these things.

I am forced to go to church. I sit there and listen to lies. Of course I can’t interrupt because all of these ‘Christians’ will hate and judge me for opposing their religion. You say others need to learn tolerance but you do! You need to! My reasons aren’t scientific. I am not atheist. I am not a deist. I am not saying your religion is crap. I’m saying I don’t agree with all of it and here is why. If you won’t even take the time to listen to what I have to say and you just mark me off as wrong you don’t deserve for others to listen to you either.

    Sincerely Sydni Lynn M.

I once thought similar things to you. I knew God was what I believed, and didn’t understand how people could even have issues with other gods. I, too thought it was funny/stupid that people could believe in other gods. Like in the Bible, seriously how could people choose the golden cow over The God. I thought, if anyone even suggested I worship a golden cow, I’d laugh in their face.

But these are metaphors. As Gods children (which I believe includes every person on this planet) we’re made into life to carry out Gods will, His purpose for us. The second we land on this planet the devil swoops in to bombard us with as many things that deflect from God as possible. These many things are the “false gods” the bible talks about. We, as humans, can’t help ourself. So when we begin to put things before God in our categorical list of priorities, we create false gods for ourself. By putting them before The God, they are automatically our false god, whether we consciously realize it or not. This can be anything from school, work, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a band, drugs, money, sex, porn, food, a pet, the list is literally endless of things we can put before God.

I know you’re intelligent, but I just wanted to clarify what it means when people say “One Direction is a god”

Also, as an aside, I ultimately believe that God wants people to treat others as equals, regardless of their sexuality, sex/gender, race, profession, health condition. God wants you to provide His love to the world, but not to love worldly things more than Him.
