• I’m Going to Tell You

Here’s what I want to say to you on Thursday:

I’m sorry for going all crazy and telling you to shave off all of your facial hair last Friday. I didn’t really mean it. What I meant was that it is just hair, that I wouldn’t mind seeing you without it, that I liked it before you turned it into a goatee. That I don’t mind it either way now, because it doesn’t change who you are.

You are one of the most amazing people I know. You are kind, funny, helpful, intelligent, and driven. You are the nice guy that every girl dreams about. Who cares if you think you dress like you belong in the 90s or that you only like to read books that have not-so-happy endings. Everything about you has made you into who you are today, and I wouldn’t change a thing about you. That’s what I want to tell you.

You are this amazing person who just happened to get closer to me right before so much fell apart at home. Without even knowing what happened, you stepped up to the plate so many times and tried to cheer me up, to make me smile and laugh and you told me these little stories about your life and who you are and what you love.

That day I found out you like to paint? I thought ‘I have never been this surprised before by any guy, and I’ve never wanted to know more about any guy more.’ My point, sorry, is that you are a wonderfully complex human being who deserves to be accepted and loved for who you are. For now, as your friend, I do accept you and love you for who you are.

It’s because I love you and accept you that I want you to have the best you can have. That means if I’m not the best girl for you, then I can live with that. That means that you need to send in that college application, because as much as I’m going to miss you, you need to reach for your dreams. Why haven’t you sent in that application yet? What are you waiting for, what’s holding you back? You said it’s because you’re lazy, and I don’t believe you.

On Thursday, I am going to apologize for the beard thing. For being stubborn when you tried to cheer me up. I’m going to tell you how amazing I think you are, how much I appreciate you, and that I think you need to apply to that college. I’m going to tell you that I’m going to miss you, that you mean a lot to me.

    With much love,
the girl who’s always the really cool friend
